REPORT:
After missing out on last years Nationals, Northfield Little League entered the tournament with little expectations. Winning our first game against the hosts with two goals from Kai and one from Bobby which set the team in a good mood and belief they could progress further as the day went on.
Next up was against a well drilled Sutton side. After observations from their first game, we knew they were the groups favourite to progress. Sutton played some very nice football, passing well and done the basics very well, they pressed us back in our own half but our solid defence put in a shift to ensure Sutton had to work harder. We had barely any chances until the last kick of the game, Bobby struck the ball to score a great goal, with the ref blowing his whistle for full time seconds after!
The last game, was a personal reminder of the 2013 tournament with the days tournament going down to the wire and relying on other results.
Playing against New Malden we knew we had to respect our opposition, as they too wanted to win this game. New Malden took an early lead after a breakdown of communication and a game of pin ball inside the area caused the opposition to take the lead. Minutes later and Joe got himself on the score sheet after he held a tight line to go on and beat the last man, 1-1. During the second half both teams had chances ,but it was New Malden who grabbed the winner after another communication error at the near post.
Despite missing out on the chance to play the finals week, Northfield played well from a squad of 16 each player all played a part. The Northfield team on a whole played very well showing great spirit and determination, each player contributing to the squad.
Those who have experienced this tournament for their first time and are lucky enough to have a chance next year to participate can take a lot away from todays experience. Well done to all who participated, thank you to the parents who came and supported us and to the managers for their efforts.
Northfield Little League would also like to thank the tournament hosts, Solihull, the match officials and opposition teams as we wish New Malden all the best on the 6th May in the finals week.
